A comedy about how destructive romanticizing the past can be.

I really enjoyed reading this novel and it's pretty great as a debut. The plot is straightforward and the writing isn't spectacular but the novel has two things going for it which set it apart: The characters and the setting. The characters are so richly developed that one gets the feeling they're directly based on people from the author's own life. Apart from one or two who come across as caricatures, I found myself constantly surprised by what they did and said, which helped draw me into the story. The main character, Jason, reminded me of myself in a lot of ways and let's just say the lesson he learns by the end is something that had me thinking long after I'd finished reading.
As for the setting, it was refreshing to see a novel set in Toronto and featuring young black Torontonians as the main characters. The author recreated the setting perfectly and this was definitely a story that couldn't have taken place anywhere else.
The only cons I have are strictly technical. The fact that the novel was self-publushed shows in some areas, as the editing could have been a bit tighter and some of the dialogue came across a bit awkward, especially towards the beginning. These flaws didn't detract from the realness of the story and characters, however.
Oh, and there's one other big thing this novel has going for it: the humour. I laughed out loud multiple times per chapter, both at things the characters said and the situations that Jason found himself in. And Jason little comments also had me in stitches often.
Definitely a recommended read if anything I've said in my review piques your interest. I look forward to reading more from Daniel S. Grant
